What Do You Think Of Callaway X-Forged Irons?
Callaway golf has long been known for its long, forgiving drivers. They started the oversize driver rage in the early 90's with their original Big Bertha driver and have since seen over 10 new drivers come out since then. Over the years, Callaway has gone from simple hickory shafted wedges to some of the most technologically advanced golf equipment on the planet.
Callaway Golf has had a reputation as the hard working truck of the golf industry, this began to change a little with the X Tour irons, but with the X Forged, Callaway has their sports car. With their second forged offering, Callaway has made a push to get into the hands of players who look for a more traditional appearance. I was fortunate enough to get out and play with a set prior to their February release.
The new Callaway X Forged irons scored very highly on rack appeal: all our testers thought these were a sexy looking set of irons that mark a real break from the Callaway tradition. They feature a Flighted CG Design for added feel, trajectory and distance control and a Notch Back, shorter length and minimal offset suited to elite players. Performance was excellent, with sweet and responsive feedback and solid distance results. However, despite consistent praise, the X Forged failed to truly stand out in our mega test, and fell short of our awards.
As the name implies, these are forged irons. They are form forged from 1020 carbon steel, which gives them a very soft feel with crisp feedback. The X Forged utilize Callaway Golf's patented notch weighting to provide heel-toe weighting for increased stability. The center of gravity is flighted through the set, meaning that in the longer irons it is lower to help get the ball airborne and moves progressively higher as you make your way to the shorter irons for added control and versatility. This allows for greater distance in the longer irons and distance control and shot shaping ability in the scoring clubs. The tour inspired styling makes these clubs very appealing to the better player.
The X Forged have the thinnest top line of any Callaway club, it has the look of a blade at address. The shorter blade length and minimal offset give these clubs the compact look that implies control and workability that the better player craves. The narrow sole is designed to maximize turf impact for crisp contact and minimal energy loss at impact. The stock Rifle Project X shafts provide a slightly heavier shaft and tour level trajectories that benefit the better player.
Forged from soft 1020 carbon steel, the new X-Forged Irons feature a Flighted CG Design for the ultimate in feel, trajectory and distance control. With their Notch Back design, shorter blade length, minimal offset and the thinnest topline and narrowest sole in the Callaway Golf line, our engineers have produced irons with the performance characteristics and classic visual elements elite players demand. A forged, Notch Back blade iron designed for elite golfers seeking the ultimate in shot-making and distance control.
These clubs are beautiful, they have the look of a true blade at address, but maintain the forgiveness that Callaway has been known for. Not saying that you can hit the ball all over the face with these, but they are far more forgiving than other "Players' Irons." As I warmed up on the range, I really liked the feel of these clubs, the slightly heavier swing weight allowed me to feel the club head through the entire swing. This is vital for shaping shots and controlling distances. I could really notice the flighted center of gravity, the ball launched higher off the longer irons which helped add distance.
The lower center of gravity also provides a bit for forgiveness in the 3 and 4 irons, clubs that you are generally hitting for distance rather than control. The mid irons were a nice blend of forgiveness and control, I was able to shape the ball and maintain distance even if I caught the ball a little on the heel or toe. The short irons provided a great deal of control, I was able to control distance very well. The lofts of these irons are closer to the traditional lofts so they play a little shorter than the X20 Tour irons, but more than make up for it with the improved control.
As with most players' irons, you know when you miss a shot, you get a little bit of a sting if you hit the ball thin with these irons. The sole design was very effective, the club would glide through the turf, it didn't get stuck and dig like some blades that I have played. The notch weighting provided enough forgiveness in the longer irons while not impeding the control in the scoring clubs.
