The Greenbrier second-round preview
The Greenbrier has traditionally been a venue where the best putting performers have flourished and there is a good chance Keegan Bradley can build on Thursday’s fine start.
The former US PGA champion may not be considered one of the finest flatstick exponents on the PGA Tour – he took a while to adapt to the anchoring ban that was enforced a few year ago.
However, he made 2.65 shots on the field in the first round on the greens at the West Virginia track and that bodes well as six of the last eight winners at the Greenbrier have featured in the top five in the strokes-gained-putting statistics.
A second place at the Travelers Championship in June shines like a beacon in his form since he was 16th at the Players Championship, but it is worth chancing he can continue his progress on a course where he finished fourth in 2014.
Bradley is 23-10 to come out on top of his 5.55pm threeball with fellow Americans Bryson DeChambeau and Scott Piercy after carding an opening 67 that included five birdies.
DeChambeau, who was the pre-tournament favourite this week with many of the game’s leading lights easing into the new season or turning their attentions to the climax of the European Tour, is as short as 11-10 to come out on top of the group.
However, he hit just 56 per cent of his greens in regulation on Thursday and will need to improve on his 68 to be a factor this week on a course where he was 14th two years ago.
Piercy meanwhile had a miserable time on the greens as he gave up 3.5 shots on the dancefloors and he is unlikely to challenge if he cannot get his act together finding the hole.
