Article content The Grade 12 student at McGregor kept her hot streak going by taking the girls’ individual title at the SWOSSAA golf championship Tuesday. She shot an 80 at Willow Ridge Golf & Country Club for a two-stroke win over Alyssa Cowling of LaSalle Villanova. Last week, Beuckelare won the LKSSAA golf championship and also placed first in mixed doubles with partner Zach Thompson at the LKSSAA South tennis playoffs. “(In) Grade 9, I was not that athletic and then I started playing a lot of school sports,” she said. “Now here I am.” Beuckelare will try to continue her winnings ways next week. She’ll celebrate her 17th birthday at the LKSSAA tennis championship Oct. 11 in Chatham and then go to the OFSAA girls’ golf festival Oct. 12 and 13 in Hamilton. Article content “I went into the golf season with the hope of making it to OFSAA, but the tennis season was more just for fun,” she said. “That’s all it is.” Beuckelare is going to OFSAA golf for the first time. So is Ursuline’s Hannah Butzer, who was fourth overall at the SWOSSAA tournament with an 85. Butzer was the top qualifier in the high school division, while Beuckelare won in the open division. “I am happy with how I played today,” Butzer said. “Very excited to spend the next couple days preparing for OFSAA and hopefully I can put on a good performance for OFSAA.” This is the first year since 2019 that local golfers can go to OFSAA. The championships were cancelled in 2020 and LKSSAA chose to not send anyone in 2021. “I just hope to place well but also have fun,” said Beuckelare, who plays at the Links of Kent. Article content It will be her second OFSAA trip – she competed this year at the badminton championship – and is only one step away from going for tennis, too. She’s come a long way since her first year at McGregor. “I played seven sports in Grade 9 high school, but I wasn’t great at any of them,” she said. Golf is her No. 1 sport. She began playing more during the pandemic and got more competitive. Playing two fall sports keeps her busy. “It’s a lot of trouble because I have a job and I have school and all that, but I do it pretty well,” she said. “Time management is OK.” Her schedule could have been even busier. “I got asked to play basketball actually, but I don’t know how to play basketball,” she said with a laugh. Jax Sisson of LaSalle Sandwich had the boys’ low score with a 72 and also led the Sabres to the team title with their three-player total of 242. Kingsville was second with 253 and Belle River was third with 264. The Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks – LKSSAA champion Cam Wellington (83), Brayden Dehaas (89), Bryson Davis (101) and Justin Ewald (102) – tied for fifth with 273. The Tilbury Titans – Christopher Fehr (88), Cole Labadie (90), Michael Fehr (97) and Ethan Sasson (97) – were seventh with 275. No local players qualified for the OFSAA boys’ championship Oct. 12 and 13 in London.
