MINNEAPOLIS – Coming off the third tournament victory of his career, Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan has been named the co-Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.Flanagan shot a 3-under 69 Sunday afternoon to hold off the field and claim medalist honors at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. At the corresponding Boilermaker Individual, Indiana’s Brock Ochsenreiter won medalist honors to earn a share of the conference award with Flanagan. It’s the second time in Flanagan’s career that he’s been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week. He’s now one of six golfers in program history to accomplish the feat along with James McLean, current Gophers head coach Justin Smith, Niall Turner and Erik Van Rooyen. Bronson LaCassie holds the program record with four Golfer of the Week accolades. The tournament leader through 36 holes, Flanagan finished 9-under at the Boilermaker Invitational with a 207 (68-70-69), claiming the third individual title in his standout career. Previously, he won the 2019 Macdonald Cup and was co-medalist at the 2019 Big Ten Championship.Flanagan’s 207 this weekend was five shots better than any other 54-hole score this year, while his finish of 9-under was seven shots better than any other Minnesota finish. Flanagan had 13 birdies over the weekend, the third time he had reached that number this season.Starting the day on the sixth hole, Flanagan had the first of his four birdies on the day at the par-4 eighth. Three holes later, he had another and was 2-under through six and in sole possession of first place. He then proceeded to card nine pars in a row to remain 2-under on the day and 8-under for the tournament with just three holes to play, though at that point he had been caught atop the leaderboard by Kent State’s Jared Wilson.Flanagan kicked it into high gear, however, notching back-to-back birdies on the par-4 3rd and the par-5 4th, while Wilson recorded pars, turning what had been a tie into a two-shot lead for the Woking, England, native. Flanagan finished with a bogey on No. 5, but Wilson finished his day with four straight pars, proving Flanagan’s lead was too much to overcome.Flanagan shot a 4-under 68 in the opening round and backed it up with a 2-under 70 in round two. The 68 matched his own score in the second round of The Goodwin for the lowest by a Gopher this year, while his score to par of 4-under is the lowest this year on the team.Starting on the back nine, Flanagan opened the tournament with a par and then rattled off three straight birdies. Three holes later he had another birdie to get to 4-under. That was followed with a bogey on No. 17 but he made the turn three shots under par. He carried that score to the seventh hole where he tallied his fifth birdie of the day to finish 4-under. His second round saw him go 3-under on the back nine again thanks to birdies on holes 12, 16 and 17. He was +1 on the front to record finish the round 2-under at 138.In four tournaments this spring, he leads the team this spring in scoring average (72.08), birdies (44), percentage of scores counted (1.000), rounds under par (6) and tournaments leading the team (3).Minnesota closes out the regular season this weekend with the Git R Done Husker Invitational at Firethorn Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.
