One way to cure the shanks is to take the club back closed. Think of the clubface remaining parallel to the buttons on your shirt. This will keep the club in front of the chest until waist-high back, at which time the thumbs point to the sky.
I designed a shoulder box to demonstrate the correct takeaway. The box is moved with the shoulders, if done correctly the club will remain in the center of the box.
