The grooves on the face of a golf club are similar to a rifle bore: the longer the golf ball stays on the clubface, the further and straighter the ball travels.
In fact, a golf ball remains on the face of a club about the same amount of time as it takes a bullet to exit the barrel of a hunting rifle.
