Iowa Set for Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational – University of Iowa Athletics


THIS WEEKThe University of Iowa women’s golf team heads to Lawrence, Kansas, for the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational from Oct. 17-18. The event, which is the Hawkeyes’ final tournament of the fall season, will be played at the Lawrence Country Club with the first 36 holes will be contested Monday followed by the final 18 on Tuesday.

LINEUPThe Hawkeyes’ lineup will include: freshmen Shannyn Vogler and Madison Dabagia, sophomore Paula Miranda, senior Jordan Amelon and Freshman Kaitlyn Hanna. Sophomore Caroline Gray will be competing as an individual.
THE FIELDIowa will compete against a field of 15 teams that includes: Arizona, Boston College, BYU, Iowa, Kansas, Kent State, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico State, Notre Dame, Sam Houston State, Tulane, UTSA, Washington State and Wisconsin. Fourteen of the teams currently are ranked in the top 100 of the Golfstat rankings, including: Arizona (12), Kent State (21), Nebraska (29), Notre Dame (55), Wisconsin (59), Minnesota (63), Kansas (66), UTSA (67), Washington State (74), BYU (76), Tulane (78), New Mexico State (90), Sam Houston (92) and Boston College (94).
THE COURSEThe Lawrence Country Club Course was voted a top-five golf course in the Midwest region.This par 72,18-hole, 6,125-yard course features rolling hills and tree lined fairways throughtout all 18 holes. The course was originally designed by Perry Maxwell in 1936 and was redesigned in 2006 by CE Golf Design, who has designed many courses across the East Coast and Midwest.

FRESHMEN ON A ROLLThe trio of Hawkeye freshmen – Shannyn Vogler, Riley Lewis and Madison Dabagia – have led the way for the Hawkeyes this fall season. Vogler currently leads the team with 73.88 scoring average, which would put her seventh all-time for individual scoring averages. While Lewis and Dabagia lead the team in birdies, with both averaging over 2.5 a round. Lewis tied for 15th at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Oct. 18, while Vogler tied for 16th at the Badger Invitational. Lewis’ final round 68 in Colorado was the team’s lowest round of the season.
LAST TIMEThe Hawkeyes finished sixth at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate from Oct. 7-9, finishing with a 54-hole total of 876 (302-286-288). Freshman Riley Lewis led the way with a 216 (E) (77-71-68) to finish tied for 15th. She tallied 11 birdies with five coming in her final round where she shot a 68 (-4), which is tied for the sixth-lowest round in program history. As a team, the Hawkeyes tallied an impressive 36 birdies en route to six rounds at or below par.
JOINING THE RECORD BOOKSThe Hawkeyes fired two of the top-12 best rounds in program history during rounds two and three at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate. The Hawkeyes fired a two-under par 286 in the second round before finishing even at 288 over the final 18 holes. The 286 is tied for the seventh-best score in program history, while the 288 is tied for 12th.
