Manistee Catholic golf wins conference title

BEULAH — Every stroke matted Monday as the Manistee Catholic Central golf team squeaked by Pentwater to claim the West Michigan D League championship at Crystal Lake Golf Club in Beulah. The Sabers shot a collective 399 to edge Pentwater’s 400 as the two were the only teams with enough golfers to compete for the title.
“The kids did well,” said MCC coach Denis Meikle. “It was a little bit of a tough day, because of the unfamiliar course, but we had beautiful weather and all the kids hung in there and eked it out.”

MCC was led by Alex Shriver, who carded an 87 in the 18-hole championship match. Shriver was second overall to the match medalist, Pentwater’s Drew Kolenda, who came in with an 82.

Brendan McComb shot a 96 for the Sabers, as Blake Johnson (103) and Mallory Meikle (113) rounded out the team score. Mathew Gunia (114) and Henry Hybza (115) also placed for MCC.

“Riding around, checking in on them (during the match), I wasn’t sure they were going to pull it off,” Meikle said, “but Alex and Brendan played really well the last six, seven holes to get us over the hump.

“Everyone else maintained,” he added, “even when they struggled at times, they minimized it, and that was huge too. You just have to grind it out, because you never know. If you can bounce back from a bad hole with a couple pars, you’re right back in it.”

For their performances during league play, Shriver, McComb and Johnson were all named first team all-conference, as Meikle and Gunia earned second team honors.
