HELLERTOWN, Pa. – One day after blistering the course at the Steel Club to the tune of 10 under par 278, the Lehigh men’s golf team shot 296 Monday, which was good enough to give the Mountain Hawks the team title a the ABARTA Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational. Lehigh’s final score of 574 (278-296) topped second place Rider by eight strokes. Villanova finished third, 11 strokes off the pace. Lafayette’s tournament featured 13 teams, including two entrants from the host Leopards.
The team title is the first for the Mountain Hawks since winning the October 2017 Lehigh Invitational at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Sophomore Sam Barton was Lehigh’s top finisher, tying for fourth place at two under par 142 (70-72). Barton carded four birdies in Monday’s final round.
The 18 hole leader, sophomore David Hurly, finished in eighth place at even par 144 (66-78). Hurly birdied his second hole of the day (No. 11) but it was his only birdie of the day. Sophomore Joey Dotta was one stroke behind Hurly at 145 (70-75). Dotta made four birdies including three of his final five holes.
Lehigh’s low round on Monday was a one under par 71 turned in by senior Owen Quinn, who moved up to tie for 12th place at 147 (76-71). Quinn’s final round included five birdies.
Freshman Edmund Broderick tied for 27th place at 151 (72-79), while classmate AJ Gilpin finished in 63rd place at 158 (77-81).
The individual medalist was Ambrose Abbracciamento of Villanova with a score of eight under par 136 (70-66). He beat Danny Gianniny of St. Bonaventure by three strokes.
The Mountain Hawks will battle Lafayette in match play in the annual Presidents’ Cup matches Thursday at Hamilton Farms Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J. Lehigh will then play in a three-team event with Bucknell and Colgate Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.
