LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After a strong start to the season, the NM State men’s golf team is making waves nationally. NM State used a third-place finish in Colorado and a sixth-place finish in Albuquerque against top talent to catch the attention of voters.
NM State shot up to 51st nationally in the first Golfstat national rankings of the 2022-23 season. The Aggies’ are closing in on the highest position in school history.
Sitting at No. 51, NM State leads all WAC and Conference USA teams. Liberty leads Conference USA teams, coming in at No. 58, while Tarleton State becomes the second-ranked WAC team at No. 100.
Garrison Smith leads all NM State golfers and sits in 11th across all Division I golfers. Smith earned WAC Golfer of the Month honors for September after a pair of third place finishes in the opening month. This season, Smith is 6-0 against golfers ranked 25-100. Smith leads all WAC golfers in the rankings, sitting 25 spots ahead of the nearest conference member.
Smith and the Aggies will host the Herb Wimberly Invitational, beginning Monday, October 17. The Herb Wimberly Invitational will take place at the NMSU Golf Course and marks the lone home tournament of the season for NM State.
