OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — The No. 4 Texas Men’s Golf team carded an 8-over-par 288 on Friday to stand in a tie for fifth place after the opening day of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Senior Pierceson Coody posted an even-par 70 to pace the Longhorns and is tied for eighth place in the individual standings after the first 18 holes.
The 15-team field at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational includes nine squads that are ranked in the top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (Sept. 17).
No. 1 Oklahoma State tallied a 1-over-par 281 and holds a two-stroke cushion over No. 6 North Carolina and Indiana at 3-over-par 283. No. 5 Arizona State is fourth at 285, and the Longhorns are tied for fifth with Purdue and No. 20 Florida. Indiana’s Drew Salyers and David Ford of North Carolina both posted a 2-under-par 68 to share the individual lead after 18 holes.
The OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational continues with 18 holes each on Saturday, Sept. 18 and Sunday, Sept. 19. Texas will be paired with Arizona State and Purdue for Saturday’s second round, and tee times will begin at 8:45 a.m. CT from hole 1.
The Lineup
Senior Pierceson Coody is tied for eighth in the individual standings at even-par 70. Playing the back nine first on Friday, he registered a team-high four birdies (No. 11, par-4; No. 13, par-3; No. 4, par-4, No. 5, par-4) during his opening round.
Senior Cole Hammer tallied a 1-over-par 71 and is tied for 13th place in the individual standings. Hammer recorded a pair of birdies (No. 16, par-3; No. 1, par-5) on Friday.
Senior Parker Coody carded a 3-over-par 73 and is tied for 32nd in the individual standings. He registered three birdies (No. 11, par-3; No. 16, par-3; No. 2, par-4) and sat at 2-under through his first 11 holes in his opening round.
Junior Travis Vick shot a 4-over-par 74 and is tied for 43rd, while junior Mason Nome posted an 8-over-par 78 and is tied for 75th place.
Playing as an individual, junior Will Thomson recorded a 6-over-par 76 and is tied for 61st in the individual standings.
