With three golfers finishing in the top five, Duluth East won the Section 7AAA boys golf championship on Saturday at the par-72 Grand National Golf Club in Hinckley.
The Greyhounds, who now advance to the Class AAA state tournament June 15-16 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, shot 309 as a team during the final round on Saturday after combining for a 308 during the opening round on Thursday. At 617, East topped second-place Princeton by eight strokes. Andover, who as a team was just two back after the opening round, finished 15 strokes back in third.
Sophomore Ben Mertz led the Greyhounds by finishing second at 3-over par. He shot a 75 on Thursday and even on Saturday. Elk River senior Brady Holland shot even par on both days to win medalist honors. Also finishing in the top five for East was senior Kaden Nelson in a tie for third at 5-over and junior Alex Wold in a tie for fifth at 6-over.
The Duluth East girls golf team was led by Adiana Lee, who finished in a tie for 11th at 176. She was the only Greyhound to make the cut in the girls 7AAA field as East finished ninth in the team standings, shooting 385 in the first round.
