Sunny Hills’ girls golf team made program history. Troy’s girls extended their league excellence and claimed an automatic berth to the CIF-SS Division 1 team championships.
The duels between the up-and-coming Lancers and perennial powerhouse Warriors indeed produced the back-and-forth competition that was anticipated this fall.
Sunny Hills captured a share of its first league title by last week earning a split with the Warriors in the Freeway League by posting a 198-199 victory at La Mirada Golf Course. Yurang Li led the Lancers by shooting 1-under-par 35 en route to medalist honors.
Troy won the teams’ first league showdown 204-207 at Hacienda Golf Club and matched Sunny Hills with a 9-1 record in league to also grab a share of the Freeway title.
The Warriors’ larger margin of victory in that Sept. 22 match determined that Troy will receive the Freeway League’s automatic berth to the Division 1 team championships at The Huntington Club in Huntington Beach on Oct. 31, Lancers coach Scott Enrico said.
The Freeway League constitution states that if there is a tie for first place, the team that won by more strokes takes the No. 1 seed, Enrico explained.
In girls golf, only league champions earn an automatic berth to the divisional team championships. Sunny Hills will seek an at-large to the Division 1 tournament, Enrico said.
In other golf results, Li won her third consecutive individual league title on Wednesday.
