2021 All-News-Herald Boys’ Golf – The News Herald


After missing out on the entire 2020 season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, golfers across the state were back on the links this spring for the 2021 boys’ season.
While there were still some adjustments, the boys’ golf season started and ended on time. Overall, spring 2021 was the first high school sports season since fall 2019 to be played without any major delays or interruptions.
As for the action on the local courses, Grosse Ile won the overall Huron League championship with an undefeated run through the dual-meet season and a first-place finish at the league meet.
The Red Devils went on to claim a regional championship and tied for sixth at the D3 state finals.
Earlier in the season, Grosse Ile tied with Trenton tied for first place at the annual Marauder Invitational.
Trenton was the overall Downriver League champion and the team went on to finish second at regionals to qualify for the D2 state meet. At the state finals, the Trojans tied for 10th place.
Also in the DRL, Woodhaven was second overall and was followed in the final league standings by Gibraltar Carlson, Wyandotte Roosevelt, Allen Park, Southgate Anderson, Edsel Ford and Taylor High.
At regionals, Woodhaven took fourth at the D1, Region 6 meet. The Warriors just missed out on qualifying for states, as they were only one stroke behind third-place Dexter. Roosevelt competed in the same regional and placed ninth.
Allen Park tied for eighth at the D2, Region 12 meet and was followed by Carlson in 10th place and Anderson in 11th place.
At the Marauder Invite, Woodhaven was third, Carlson wrapped up in fifth, Allen Park took sixth, Anderson finished eighth, Roosevelt was 10th and Taylor High placed 13th.
Back in the Huron League, Riverview finished runner up for this year. The Pirates placed second in in dual-meet season and  second at the league meet. New Boston Huron was next behind Riverview, as it was third in dual meets and third at the league meet. Flat Rock rounded things out in the Huron League standings this spring.
Riverview took seventh at the D2, Region 12 meet and Huron tied for eighth while Flat Rock was 10th at the D3, Region 18 meet.
At the Marauder Invite, the Chiefs placed seventh, the Pirates finished ninth and the Rams were 14th.
In the Catholic League, Riverview Gabriel Richard placed sixth at the D4, Region 24 meet and it was fourth at the Marauder Invite.
The All-News-Herald Team features any golfer who earned all-league honors in his respective league this season.
Meet the 2021 All-News-Herald Team
Anthony Naso, Grosse Ile: Naso earned all-state honors in D3 in what was his junior season. He capped off the year with a runner-up finish at the state meet (70-75-145). At regionals (72), he won an individual championship and was five strokes ahead of the next best finisher. Earlier in the year, he won the individual championship at the Marauder Invite (78).
Caden Gloss, Trenton: Gloss earned an all-state honorable mention in D2 in what was his senior season. He was the individual champion at regionals (75). He went on to lead the Trojans at the state meet (78-76-154) and placed 32nd overall, which put him in the top 30 percent of the field. Earlier in the season, at the Marauder Invite (82), he tied for first on the team and was fifth overall.
Evan Bliss, Woodhaven: Bliss finished up his high school athletic career with a big season on the golf course. The senior and All-Downriver League honoree qualified for the D1 state finals as an individual. To claim his spot at states, he finished second at regionals (73) among the individual qualifiers and he was fifth overall at the event. At the state meet (77-82-159) he was 13th among the individual qualifiers and he placed 46th overall, which put him in the top half of the field.

Aiden Gazdecki, Riverview: Gazdecki picked up First-Team All-Huron League honors for the 2021 season. The senior led Riverview at regionals (91) and was 22nd overall, which put him around the top 30 percent of the field. Earlier, he was tops for the Pirates at the Marauder Invite (87) and he finished 15th overall that day.
Parker Miklos, Grosse Ile: Miklos was a First-Team All-Huron League honoree this spring. The junior finished ninth overall at regionals (82) and he placed third for the Grosse Ile squad. At the state meet (89-82-171) he tied for third on the team and was 51st overall, which put him in the half of the field. Earlier in the year, he was fourth for the Red Devils at the Marauder Invite (90).
Marco Tylutki, Huron: Tylutki picked up First-Team All-Huron League honors this spring with Huron. The sophomore led the Chiefs at regionals (90) and he finished 20th overall, which put him around the top 25 percent of the field. He was also first for Huron at the Marauder Invite (85), which was held earlier in the year, and he placed 12th overall at the meet.
Will Barrett, Trenton: Barrett came on strong in his freshman season at Trenton. The All-Downriver League honoree was second for the Trojans at the state meet (80-78-158) and 46th overall, which put him in the top half of the field. He was third for the squad at regionals (90) and 20th overall. Earlier in the year, he tied for the team lead at the Marauder Invite (82) and finished fifth overall.
Blake Wagner, Richard: Wagner earned All-Catholic honors this season at Richard and he is one of several players due back next year for the team. The junior led the Pioneers at regionals (94) and he was 20th overall at the meet, which put him in the top 25 percent of the field. He was also tops for Richard at the Marauder Invite (82), which was held earlier in the season, and he finished fifth overall.
Luke Champnella, Grosse Ile: Champnella earned First-Team All-Huron League honors for the 2021 season. The junior was seventh overall at regionals (81) and he was second for Grosse Ile. At the state meet (83-88-171), he tied for third on the team and finished 51st overall, which put him in the top half of the field. Earlier in the season, he tied for second on the Red Devils squad at the Marauder Invite (84) and was 10th overall.
Eli Saco, Woodhaven: Saco shined on the links in what was his junior year with Woodhaven. The All-Downriver League honoree finished second for the Warriors at regionals (76) and he was ninth overall. Earlier in the year, he was runner up at the Marauder Invite (80).
Liam Bazner, Trenton: Bazner, a freshman, gave Trenton a lot to look forward to over the next three years. The All-Downriver League honoree finished third for the Trojans at the state meet (78-81-159) and was 51st overall, which put him in the top half of the field. At regionals (91) he placed fourth for the team and was 22nd overall.
Kyler Worley, Riverview: Worley claimed First-Team All-Huron League honors in what was his sophomore season at Riverview. He was second for the Pirates at regionals (94) and finished 34th overall, which put him in the top half of the field. At the Marauder Invite (96), he finished second on the team and was 36th overall.
Aiden Cookson, Grosse Ile: Cookson, a sophomore, was one of four Grosse Ile golfers who picked up First-Team All-Huron League honors in the 2021 season.
Cole Burke, Trenton: Burke, a junior, is one of several talented golfers due back next year for the Trenton squad. The All-Downriver League honoree placed fifth for the Trojans at regionals (92) but his score was good enough for 27th overall and it put him in the top 35 percent of the field. He went on to finished fourth for Trenton at the state meet (81-85-166). Earlier in the season, he placed third for the squad at the Marauder Invite (85) and was 12th overall at that event.
Dylan Young, Woodhaven: Young came on strong for Woodhaven in what was his final season with the team. At regionals (77), the senior and All-Downriver League honoree placed third for the Warriors and he finished 13th overall. Earlier in the year, at the Marauder Invite (81), he finished second for Woodhaven and was third overall.
Austin Myers, Huron: Myers capped off his impressive athletic career with Second-Team All-Huron League honors in golf this spring. The senior finished second for Huron at regionals (92) and he was 27th overall, which put him in the top 35 percent of the field. Earlier in the year, he placed third for the Chiefs at the Marauder Invite (98) and was 42nd overall. He signed on to play football at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Luke Taulbee, Grosse Ile: Taulbee earned Second-Team All-Huron League honors this spring. The senior finished fourth for Grosse Ile at regionals (87) and was 16th overall. He placed fifth for the Red Devils at the state meet (91-82-173) and was 55th overall, which put him near the top half of the field.
Colin Riley, Riverview: In what was his junior season, Riley earned Second-Team All-Huron League honors at Riverview. He finished third for the Pirates at regionals (97) and was 41st overall.
Anthony Robbins, Huron: A freshman in 2021, Robbins claimed Second-Team All-Huron League honors with Huron. He finished third for the Chiefs at regionals (97) and was 41st overall.
Tyler Plassman, Trenton: Plassman, a senior, wrapped up his high school golf career as an All-Downriver League honoree. He placed second for Trenton at regionals (86) and was 11th overall. He competed on the first day of the state meet (89). Earlier in the year, he finished fourth for the Trojans at the Marauder Invite (87) and was 15th overall at the meet.
Ian Norscia, Anderson: Norscia capped off his impressive athletic career with a solid season on the golf course. The senior and All-Downriver League honoree was third for Anderson at regionals (104) and 55th overall. He was second for the Titans at the Marauder Invite (96), held earlier in the year, and was 36th overall at that meet.
Brendan Yaramus, Carlson: Yaramus earned All-Downriver League honors in what was his senior year at Carlson. He was fourth for the Marauders at regionals (102). He tied for third on the team earlier in the year at the Marauder Invite (92) and was 24th overall at that meet.
Josh Mills, Roosevelt: Mills claimed All-Downriver League honors in what was his junior year at Roosevelt. At regionals he was second for the Bears (86) and 27th overall, which put him around the top 35 percent of the field. He was also second for the squad earlier in the year at the Marauder Invite (101).
Gavin Witt, Trenton: Witt, a junior, was one of seven Trenton players who earned All-Downriver League honors in 2021. He competed the second day at the state meet (81).

Connor Hairgrove, Inter-City: Hairgrove, a sophomore, earned first-team all-conference honors in the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference this spring. At regionals (83) he finished fifth overall.
Hayden Kieltyka, Cabrini: Kieltyka, a junior, picked up all-league honors this season. He finished 25th overall at regionals (96), which put him around the top 30 percent of the field.
Nick Szczechowski, Richard: One of the top overall athletes in the area, Szczechowski came up big for the Richard golf team in 2021. The junior and all-league honoree was fourth for the Pioneers at regionals (99) and he was 33rd overall, which put him in the top half of the field. Earlier in the year, at the Marauder Invite (87), he placed third for Richard and was 15th overall.
