Hofgren, Dowell Earn Big South Weekly Women’s Golf Honors After Strong Finishes

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb women’s golfers Linnea Hofgren and Kayla Dowell each earned weekly honors Thursday afternoon from the Big South Conference following top-10 finishes.Hofgren (Molnycke, Sweden) was named the Women’s Golfer of the Week, while teammate Kayla Dowell (Mebane, N.C.) was selected as the Women’s Golf Freshman of the Week after exceptional play at the 2021 Elon Fall Invitational.Hofgren was runner-up at the Elon Invitational (par 71, 6,031 yards) with a 2-over 215 (70-74-71).  She made the second-most birdies with 10, had the second-lowest average on the par-4 layouts (4.03), and played the par-5 holes at 2-under. Hofgren has now been named Big South Women’s Golfer of the Week three times during her career.Dowell was seventh at the Elon Invitational with an 8-over 221 (77-69-75).  She tied the tournament lead in par-5 scoring (-4) and tied for second on the par-3 holes (3.17).  Dowell also made nine birdies in recording her first collegiate Top 10 standing.Hofgren and Dowell’s performance in Burlington, N.C., lifted Gardner-Webb to a third-place team finish.The Gardner-Webb women will travel to Blacksburg, Va., on October 4 for the Radford Fall Shootout.
